The loading and unloading operations of tanker trucks are never as simple as "loading and unloading". They must be carried out strictly following a set of meticulous and standardized procedures to ensure the safe and efficient circulation of fuel throughout the process. We should develop fixed and standardized operating routines. The standardized procedures are like a "safety amulet", helping me avoid many potential mistakes and ensuring that everyone on site can work safely. Next, I will explain in detail how I handle each step of the entire loading and unloading process.


Loading method 

Top-mounted loading method

When I use the top-filling method, the process is quite simple. First, open the cover on the top of the fuel tank, then insert the fuel hose. I usually stand beside the fuel tank opening, watching the fuel slowly fill into the tank. The most obvious advantage of this method is that you can clearly see the oil level rising slowly and stop filling before the fuel overflows from the tank.


However, safety cannot be compromised in any way. Before each operation:

Personal protection before operation : Before any operation begins, all personal protective equipment must be properly worn. 

Equipment safety inspection : Carefully check if there are any cracks or leaks in the hoses, and ensure that all connections are firmly tightened. 

Vehicle fixation measures : Make sure to engage the handbrake and place anti-skid blocks at the front and rear of the wheels.

Process monitoring during operation : The operator must remain at the fueling port throughout the process and closely monitor the situation.


💡 Tip: Although top-mounted loading is clear to see, be sure to pay attention to preventing the smoke from fuel evaporation and the risk of static electricity. Many companies no longer use this method now, but some old fuel transport trailers are still using it.


Bottom filling

If I had to pick my favorite method, it would definitely be bottom refueling! It's both safe and efficient, and much more convenient than top fueling. When operating, connect the hose to the valve at the bottom of the fuel tank. The fuel flows upwards from the bottom, so there won't be too much spillage or smoke, and it's more friendly to the operators. During the fueling process, I use instruments and sensors to precisely control the filling process. I can clearly see how much fuel has been added to each compartment.


 Before operating, I will carefully recheck the hose connection to ensure everything is perfect.

During the loading process, I will check the instrument data. If any abnormal situation is detected, I will stop this process.

 I keep the remote shutdown device with me in case I need to stop the loading process quickly and use it in time.

Unloading Methods 

• Gravity Unloading

The oil drainage operation is quite simple. First, park the trailer properly, then open the valve to allow the fuel to flow down by its own gravity into the storage tank. This drainage method works best when the position of the storage tank is lower than that of the trailer. I will observe the flow of the oil and shut off the valve when the storage tank is almost full and the oil supply from the trailer is about to run out. This will prevent any fuel from spilling out.

However, safety procedures cannot be omitted. Before starting the oil drainage, I will definitely check all the connections to ensure there are no loose parts. During the drainage process, I will stay near the valve and the hose, getting closer so that I can detect any leaks immediately and handle them promptly. Additionally, after the drainage is completed, all hoses must be thoroughly rinsed clean before proceeding to the next step. 

Pump-assisted unloading

Sometimes, gravity alone is simply not enough - for instance, if the storage tank is higher than the trailer, or if the distance is too far, gravity simply cannot pump the oil. At such times, pump-assisted unloading comes into play.

The operation of pump-assisted unloading is not complicated. Once the pump is turned on, it will draw the fuel from the fuel tank and transfer it to the storage system. This method is highly targeted and would be the right choice for the special situation mentioned earlier. When I operate it, I will deliberately control the speed and pressure of the pump to avoid being too forceful, ensuring a smooth process throughout.

Let me highlight the precautions: Before starting the pump, both the pump body and the connected hose must be carefully inspected. Only when everything is in order can it be turned on. During the oil unloading process, I will keep my eyes on the reading of the pressure gauge and pay close attention to any changes. If I detect any abnormalities, such as fluctuating pressure or hearing strange sounds from the pump, I will immediately turn off the pump and investigate the problem before continuing.

Fire and Explosion Prevention ⚠️ 

During the entire process of fuel operations, strict fire prevention and explosion prevention measures must be implemented to ensure the safety of the operators and those around them, and to guarantee that the operation area complies with safety control standards.

Given that fuel vapor has highly flammable and explosive properties, even a very small ignition energy can cause a combustion or explosion accident. Therefore, during the operation process, safety operation guidelines must be strictly followed, and any reckless violation of regulations is strictly prohibited. The principle of zero tolerance for risks must be adhered to throughout the process. 


Here is the checklist I have formulated for fire prevention and explosion protection:

1. Before conducting loading or unloading operations, to prevent the generation of static sparks, I always ground and electrify the oil tanker.

2. I regularly check the effectiveness of fire extinguishers and keep them in easily accessible locations.

3. I never smoke or use open flames near the oil tanker.

4. I will pay attention to any leakage or spillage of liquids and immediately clean it up.

5. I strictly abide by all the posted regulations at fuel supply stations and distribution points.
