Luyi Vehicle-Custom Semi Trailers & Truck Manufacturer
The Real Challenge on the Djibouti-Addis Corridor
Ethiopia is a landlocked country. More than 90 percent of its import and export cargo moves through the Port of Djibouti.
From the coast of Djibouti up into the Ethiopian highlands, trucks cover over 900 kilometers. The road climbs from hot sea-level plains to elevations above 2,400 meters in Addis Ababa.
On this busy route, transport companies need trailers that can haul two very different kinds of cargo
Inbound from the port: 20-foot and 40-foot sea containers loaded with machinery, electronics, and consumer goods.
Outbound or domestic routes: heavy bagged cargo, such as export coffee, sesame, wheat, bagged cement, and construction steel.
If a fleet buys a skeleton trailer that only carries containers, the truck often runs empty on return trips.
The buyer in Ethiopia chose our 12.5m × 2.5m × 1.6m flatbed semi-trailer because it does both jobs on the same chassis.
12 Twist Locks: Total Cargo Flexibility
A standard container chassis usually carries only one 40-foot box.
This trailer features 12 heavy-duty container twist locks integrated into the side beams of the flat deck.
This setup gives the driver three loading options:
One standard 40-foot shipping container.
Two 20-foot shipping containers at the same time.
One single 20-foot container placed directly in the center of the deck for balanced axle loading.
When no containers are booked, the locks fold flat into the deck floor. The trailer instantly turns into an open cargo deck for bagged goods, crated machinery, or timber. The owner never has to turn down a paying load.
The 1.6-Meter Front Bulkhead Protects the Driver
Hauling heavy goods across mountain passes involves steep downhill grades and sudden stops.
If a driver has to hit the brakes hard while carrying 30 tons of steel rebar or stacked cement bags, loose cargo can slide forward with huge force.
Our trailer comes fitted with a 1.6-meter reinforced steel front bulkhead (headboard).
The bulkhead acts as a solid steel shield behind the truck tractor. It keeps forward-shifting cargo on the trailer bed and away from the driver’s cab. It also provides a rigid front anchor point to tie down straps and chains tightly.
The Detachable Rear Design: Big Savings on Ocean Freight
Shipping a 12.5-meter trailer from China to Africa usually requires a bulk cargo vessel (RORO or breakbulk).
Bulk vessel space is expensive. Trailers parked on open decks can also suffer surface corrosion from saltwater mist during the long voyage.
A standard 40-foot high-cube (40HQ) shipping container has an internal length of about 12.03 meters. That means a regular 12.5-meter trailer is just 47 centimeters too long to fit inside.
To solve this, our engineers created a detachable rear frame:
The rear light bar and rear overhang are built as a separate bolt-on module.
In our workshop, the rear section is unbolted, shortening the chassis frame just enough to slide into the container.
Two complete trailer chassis and their running gear fit cleanly inside a single 40HQ container.
This simple engineering adjustment delivered massive value:
The buyer paid container freight rates instead of expensive breakbulk ship rates.
Sea freight costs per trailer dropped by nearly half.
Both trailers stayed completely protected from ocean weather inside a sealed shipping box.
Once the container arrived, the buyer’s workshop simply lined up the rear modules and tightened the high-grade connection bolts.
3-Axle Mechanical Suspension for Rough Mountain Highways
The highway between Djibouti and Addis Ababa takes a heavy beating from constant overloaded traffic. Deep ruts, potholes, and gravel detour sections are common.
For this environment, the customer selected a 3-axle mechanical leaf spring suspension.
Mechanical suspension has no delicate air bags or air control valves that can leak or tear on rocky tracks. Thick multi-leaf steel springs absorb road shock, keep tire wear even, and handle heavy axle weights day in and day out.
If a spring leaf ever wears out after years of hard service, local mechanics in any town along the corridor can replace it quickly using standard tools.
The Ethiopia Order
The buyer runs an expanding logistics fleet based in central Ethiopia. They wanted to add new trailers without blowing their budget on ocean freight.
We worked through the detailed requirements together: the 12.5-meter deck length, the position of the 12 twist locks, the 1.6-meter bulkhead height, and the detachable rear joint.
The trailers were manufactured at our factory in Shandong, packed into 40HQ containers, and shipped by sea to the Port of Djibouti.
After the containers reached the customer’s depot, our team provided instructional videos showing the exact bolt-tightening sequence and torque specifications for reattaching the rear modules. We followed up with video call guidance to make sure their mechanics were completely comfortable with the assembly.
Today, these trailers are in continuous service moving containers up from the port and carrying dry goods back.
Running an import-export trucking fleet means managing both road reality and shipping costs. If high ocean freight is keeping you from updating your fleet, or if your current trailers cannot switch between containers and bulk loads, talk to LUYI Vehicle.
Tell us what cargo you carry and where your trucks run. We will engineer the right trailer and the smartest shipping method for your business.
