One Trailer That Does What Two Used To

The customer in Mozambique had a familiar problem. Their fleet was hauling construction and mining equipment — excavators, generators, prefabricated bridge sections — and the cargo never came in one size. Short loads one week, extended loads the next. Running two trailer types tied up capital and complicated scheduling.

What they needed was a single platform that could adapt. The 16m × 2.5m extendable low flatbed is exactly that. Base deck at 16 meters covers the majority of loads. When something longer comes in, the hydraulic extension opens to 22 meters and locks. Same trailer, same driver, no second unit sitting idle.

The low bed height is not a secondary feature — it is the reason this trailer category exists. Heavy equipment sits high on its own. An excavator on a standard flatbed pushes the combined height into territory that runs into bridges, power lines, and tunnel clearances. A low bed brings the cargo height down to where the transport becomes possible, not just legal.

Why the Rear Axles Were the Real Conversation

Deck length is straightforward. The suspension choice took longer to resolve.

Mozambique's heavy haul routes are not motorways. From Beira port into Tete province, the road quality changes multiple times on a single run. Stretches of paved national road give way to regional sections that have seen better decades. Then there are the final kilometers into mining sites — access roads that were built for smaller vehicles and never widened.

A rear axle that only carries load is not enough. The buyer needed the rear axle group to do three things:

It needed to carry load — distribute the gross vehicle weight across six axle positions rather than three, which matters on road sections where weight limits are enforced.

It needed to lift — on the empty return run, the rear axles come off the road. An empty low flatbed at full axle contact rolls slower and burns more fuel than it needs to. Lifted, the return trip is lighter and the tires last longer.

It needed to steer — this was non-negotiable. A 22-meter trailer with a fixed rear axle cannot navigate a port terminal or a mining site access road without putting wheels on ground they should not be on. Rear steering lets the back of the trailer track the front through the turn instead of pushing wide. The difference between a trailer that fits into a worksite and one that does not is often just this: whether the rear axle follows the cab or fights it.

Air suspension on the rear group handles the load leveling automatically. When an excavator loads unevenly — and they always load unevenly, because of the boom, the counterweight, the bucket — the air system adjusts. The deck stays level. The cargo stays stable. The trailer does not fight itself through every bump on the road to the site.

The front three axles run mechanical suspension. For primary load-bearing on variable surfaces, mechanical is the right call. Fewer components to manage in the field, no air lines to trace when something needs attention on a remote route.

What the Mozambique Buyer Actually Runs

Their operation covers heavy equipment moves across the construction and mining corridors that connect Mozambique's ports to the interior. Beira handles cargo for the central and western routes. Nacala serves the north. Maputo handles the south.

The equipment they transport reflects where the money is going in Mozambique right now: coal extraction in Tete, LNG and gas infrastructure on the northern coast, road and bridge construction in between. All of it requires moving large machines across long distances on roads that were not designed for what they now carry.

The buyer's drivers needed to be able to operate the extension and the rear steering without a support team on site. Our team prepared instructional videos covering the hydraulic extension procedure, the axle lift sequence, and the rear steering calibration — so when the trailers arrived, the crew had a reference they could actually use, in the field, without waiting for someone to fly in.

If You Run Heavy Equipment in Southern or East Africa

The configuration on this Mozambique order — 6-axle, extendable, rear steer — is not the only way to build a low flatbed. It is the right way for this buyer's routes and cargo mix. Different axle counts, different extension ranges, and different suspension arrangements exist for different applications.
