The Problem This Trailer Solves
Moving containers is easy when a port crane or yard forklift is always available. But in Benin — and across West Africa — a lot of container pickups and drop-offs happen away from well-equipped terminals. Warehouses, factory yards, construction sites, and inland depots often have no lifting equipment on site.
That is the problem a side loader trailer solves. It carries its own hydraulic lifting system. The driver arrives at the pickup point, lifts the container from the ground using the side lift arms, loads it onto the trailer, and drives away. No crane needed. No waiting for yard equipment. No third party involved.
The buyer in Benin runs container transport between Cotonou port and various inland destinations. Some of those stops have crane access. Most do not. They needed a trailer that could handle both situations without changing equipment.
How the Lift System Works
The side lift system uses two hydraulic arms, one on each side of the trailer. The arms extend outward, lower to grip the container at its corner castings, then lift it vertically and place it onto the trailer deck.
The hydraulic power comes from a 4102 diesel engine driving a hydraulic station mounted on the trailer. This setup is independent — the lift runs whether the tractor is running or not. The driver controls the lift from a panel at the side of the trailer.
The lift capacity is 37 tons. That covers a fully loaded 20ft container and most loaded 40ft containers within standard weight limits.
The whole loading process takes around 10 to 15 minutes on level ground. For a driver making multiple stops in a day, that speed matters.
20ft and 40ft in One Trailer
The trailer body is 20 feet long in its base position. When a 40ft container needs to be carried, the deck extends to 40 feet. The extension is built into the trailer frame and operates hydraulically.
This means the operator does not need two different trailers for two different container sizes. One trailer, one driver, both sizes covered. For a fleet operator in Benin managing mixed container runs, this reduces the number of units needed and simplifies scheduling.
When the deck is at 20ft, it carries a 20ft container. When extended to 40ft, it carries a 40ft container. The corner locking pins adjust to match the container size. The container sits secure on the deck during transport.
The Suspension
Three-axle mechanical suspension runs the full length of the trailer. Mechanical suspension on a container side loader is the right choice for this application. The trailer carries heavy, compact loads — a loaded container sits in a fixed position on the deck. The load does not shift during transit the way liquid or loose cargo does.
Mechanical suspension handles that kind of static, heavy load well. It is also straightforward to maintain. Parts are widely available in West Africa. A local mechanic can service it without specialized tools or training.
Why This Works in Benin
Benin sits at a crossroads in West Africa. Cotonou port is one of the busiest transit hubs in the region. Goods move through Cotonou not just for Benin but for Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali. Container volumes are high and growing.
At the same time, logistics infrastructure outside the port varies. Many delivery points — warehouses in Cotonou's industrial zone, storage depots near the northern border crossings, factory yards inland — do not have dedicated container handling equipment. A trailer that handles its own loading and unloading fits this environment directly.
The 4102 diesel engine is a practical choice for the same reason. It is widely used across West Africa. Parts are available locally. Mechanics know it. When something needs attention on the road between Cotonou and Parakou, the driver or a local workshop can sort it without waiting for specialist support.
What the Benin Buyer Runs
Their operation covers container moves from Cotonou port to inland destinations across Benin. Some loads are import cargo for local distribution.
Some are goods in transit to landlocked neighboring countries. Container sizes are mixed — they see 20ft and 40ft containers regularly, often on the same day's run.
Before this trailer, they were working around the limitation of fixed-deck trailers and crane dependency. This side loader removed that constraint. Their drivers can now complete pickups and drop-offs at locations that were previously only possible with pre-arranged crane access.
After the trailers arrived, our team sent instructional videos covering the lift arm operation, deck extension sequence, and container locking procedure. The buyer's drivers were running the system independently within the first week.
If You Move Containers Without Crane Access
Not every delivery point has a crane. If your routes include stops where containers need to be loaded or unloaded without yard equipment, a side loader removes the bottleneck. Tell us what container sizes you carry and what your typical delivery points look like. We size the lift system and trailer configuration to match your actual operation.
