Why Deck Length Matters on Kenya's Main Corridors

Most heavy freight entering Kenya lands at the Port of Mombasa. From there, cargo moves along the Northern Corridor toward Nairobi, western Kenya, and neighboring inland borders.

Along these routes, contractors move large machinery every day: 30-ton excavators, road rollers, motor graders, drilling rigs, and long structural steel beams.

When a transport company uses a standard 13-meter trailer, they often hit a wall:

- A long-reach excavator with its arm laid flat does not fit comfortably.

- Moving two medium pieces of equipment requires two separate trips.

- Every extra trip burns expensive fuel and doubles road toll charges.

The buyer in Kenya chose our 16.5m × 2.5m × 1.8m low-bed semi-trailer to solve this exact problem.

The extra deck length allows an operator to load long-wheelbase machines with their attachments flat on the deck. On busy construction schedules, this means fewer trips, less turnaround time at the port, and lower running costs per ton moved.

Low Deck Height Keeps Heavy Loads Safe

Moving heavy machinery is not just about weight. It is also about height.

If you load a 3.5-meter-tall excavator on a standard high flatbed, the total height easily exceeds 4.5 meters. On Kenyan highways, that risks hitting overhead power cables, toll gates, and bridge underpasses.

A low-bed trailer lowers the cargo deck closer to the road.

This lower center of gravity delivers two practical benefits:

First, it brings tall machinery down within legal road height limits. Drivers can pass under highway bridges without taking long, costly detours on rough dirt tracks.

Second, it keeps the truck much more stable around tight mountain bends, like the climbs between Mombasa and Nairobi. The machine sits firmly planted on the deck instead of swaying side to side. This trailer has a total capacity of 45 cubic meters (45,000 liters), divided into 4 separate compartments.

BPW Axles: Reliable Running Gear for Rough Roads

Road conditions across East Africa change quickly. A smooth stretch of newly paved tarmac can suddenly turn into washboard gravel, deep potholes, or dusty detour tracks near roadwork zones.

For running gear, the buyer specified BPW axles.

BPW is one of the most trusted heavy axle brands across Africa:

The axle beam is thick and built to withstand continuous heavy shock loads.

Bearings and brake drums handle long downhill braking without overheating.

Spare parts, brake shoes, and seals are readily available in major Kenyan cities like Mombasa, Nairobi, and Nakuru.

When a trailer breaks down on a remote road, waiting weeks for imported parts costs more than the repair itself. With BPW running gear, local mechanics already know the setup, and replacement parts can be sourced locally.

Mechanical Suspension and Triangle 1200R20 Tires

This trailer uses a heavy-duty 3-axle mechanical leaf spring suspension.

In areas with deep potholes and uneven ground, mechanical suspension is simple and tough. It distributes heavy axle weight evenly without relying on air lines or sensitive valves that could snag on roadside rocks.

Underneath, the trailer runs on Triangle 1200R20 heavy-duty tube-type tires:

Triangle is a well-known tire brand in East Africa with a strong track record for tread life.

The 1200R20 size features a deep tread pattern and strong sidewalls that resist cuts from sharp roadside gravel.

Tube-type 20-inch tires handle high heat and heavy payloads reliably during long daytime highway hauls.

Space-Saving Stacked Shipping

To help the buyer save money on sea freight, we designed the goosenecks and deck profiles so the trailers could be stacked in pairs for transport. One trailer sits securely on top of the other, with heavy tie-downs holding them tight. This cut the total shipping volume nearly in half on the cargo vessel, directly saving the customer thousands of dollars in ocean freight before the trailers even touched the road.

The Kenya Order

The buyer operates a fleet supporting civil engineering and road paving projects across Kenya. They needed trailers that could pick up equipment directly from the Mombasa container terminal and haul it all the way upcountry without maintenance surprises. We confirmed every specification before manufacturing started: the 16.5-meter deck length, the gooseneck height to match their tractor fifth wheel, the BPW axle capacity, and the tire brand. After production at our Shandong factory, the trailers were shipped by sea from China to the Port of Mombasa.

Once the trailers arrived, our service team sent instructional videos showing proper kingpin greasing, spring leaf inspection, and ramp operation. We also held a video call with the buyer’s workshop supervisor to answer maintenance questions. The trailers were put straight to work on the Mombasa-Nairobi corridor.

If You Move Heavy Equipment in East Africa

Not every heavy haul job fits a standard trailer. If you are struggling with deck length that is too short, high tire wear on rough corridors, or difficulty finding replacement running gear parts, talk to LUYI Vehicle.

Tell us what machinery you haul and what routes you drive. We will build a trailer tailored to your real work on the ground.
